How do I set goals for the new year that I will actually stick with?
What This Episode Is About
Amy walks you through her end-of-year reflection and planning process, the same one she does for herself every single year. You start by honestly reviewing the year that is closing, deciding what to leave behind and what to carry forward, then map your goals into a few life categories with no more than two or three each so you do not set yourself up to fail. The deeper move is stepping into a higher, truer identity, choosing words of the year and a mantra, so you attract more and stay the course because it feels easy instead of forced.
Even though we are creatures of habit, we want to progress. The natural inclination is to continually progress, become better versions of ourselves.

Your Invitation
Grab a pen and paper and answer the three questions: what do you want to leave behind, what do you want to take with you, and what do you want your year to look like. Then pick your words and write a mantra you can actually get behind.
When you are ready to see your own patterns clearly and move differently, the Mirror is where that work begins.
Meet the Mirror →Questions This Episode Answers
- Why do most new year resolutions fail?
- The average person sticks with a resolution only two to three weeks before giving up, usually because they shoot for the moon too quickly and are not energetically aligned, so they self-sabotage. Stepping into a truer identity first makes staying the course feel easy instead of forced.
- What reflection questions should I ask at the end of the year?
- Ask what you want to leave behind, what you want to take with you into the new year, and what you want your year to look like from the moment you wake up to the vacations you take. Answer them with grace, then recommit.
- How many goals should I set per category?
- No more than two or three per category, across areas like spiritual or mindset, physical, business, relationships, and family. More than that sets you up for failure, though Amy still wants you to stretch yourself.
- What is a word of the year and a mantra, and how do I use them?
- You choose a few meaningful words for the year, then build a mantra from them that feels so true it motivates you every time you hear it. You review them throughout the year so they keep shaping how you show up.
- Why does Amy keep such a regimented morning routine?
- Because keeping her own commitments to herself first thing, making the bed, working out, meditating, reading, and manifesting, sets her up to show up better in every other area. When she chooses herself the minute she wakes up, she feels in her power for the rest of the day.

As humans, we are creatures who want to continually progress, but we are also creatures of habit. And so a lot of times we do fall short when we have so many goals. And so as I pulled out my sheet, I think it was two weeks ago, of what I wanted to accomplish in 2024, there were areas where I really did well. Like I hit my goals, I was really proud of some of the accomplishments that I did this year.
One of them being that I completed the Chicago Marathon, which is one of the top six marathons. And I also qualified for the Boston Marathon, which is something that I was wanting to do for the last couple of years. I got qualified, that was on my list. I kept my weight where I wanted it to be, but I fell short in my business.
What I wanted for my business, I fell short as far as how much money I wanted to make. Welcome to the Thrive Her podcast. I'm your host, Amy Sanders. I'm a fitness and wellness pro.
Mom, stepmom, second wife, and master certified life coach. I'm here to help you manage your mind so you can uncover the most potent version of yourself and create a thriving life you love. Hello! This podcast is all about showing women how to thrive in their lives.
Whether it be in their business, their personal life, their fitness journey, whatever it is, I'm here to help give you the tools and the guidance you have. And so I'm glad you're tuning in today. And as we get started, I first and foremost just want to extend my gratitude to you. As we wrap up this year, we're at the end of year 2024.
And at the time of this recording, we only have a couple weeks left before we enter into a whole new year. Which means that when we come upon the end of one year and we're moving into the next year, there's a lot of reflection that I'm going to have. There's a lot that we look back on. How did this year go?
What can we do better? People have their New Year's resolutions. And a lot of times they don't stick. They don't stick very long.
But I think the average person sticks with their New Year's resolution two to three weeks before they give up. And obviously, I did not want that for you. I don't want that for me. I want you to continually thrive in your life.
And so that's what this episode is going to be. So if you are tuning in, I do recommend you grab a pen and paper and write down some of these questions. Maybe grab your phone and type them in. Because this is going to be an episode of more of like reflection.
And I'm going to ask you some questions for you to ponder. And this is going to be personal. And so it's going to be different for everyone. My answers would be different than your answers.
And as we get started, I want you to just go ahead. And take a minute to look at this past year. I want you to just lean in. And see how the year went overall.
Honestly. So I do this every single year where towards the end of the year, I grab out. I grab my goals that I made for the beginning of the year. And I go through them.
And I see where I fell short, where I succeeded, how things went. Essentially. And as humans, we are creatures who want to continually progress. But we are also creatures of habit.
And so a lot of times we do fall short when we have so many goals. And so as I pulled out my sheet, I think it was two weeks ago. Of what I wanted to accomplish in 2024. There were areas where I really did well.
Like I hit my goals. I. Was really proud of some of the accomplishments that I did this year. One of them being that I completed the Chicago marathon, which is one of the top six marathons.
And I also qualified for the Boston marathon, which is something that I was wanting to do for the last couple of years. I got qualified. That was on my list. I kept my weight where I wanted it to be.
But I fell short in my business, what I wanted for my business. I fell short as far as how much money I wanted to make. And some of my spiritual goals, I hit part of them spot on. Other ones.
Weren't as good as I had hoped. And the reason why I'm telling you this is because I came to my husband and I was frustrated. I was like, oh, my gosh, I am so frustrated that I didn't come further in these other areas of my life. And I also had personal stuff and I also had family stuff.
So I had all these different goals for me for the year 2024. And he's OK. Let's talk about it. And I was truthfully really frustrated.
And. As we went through my goals, he's so overall, you did really progress quite a bit this year and you hit some pretty hard goals. And his perspective of where I was versus my own perspective were totally different. And so as I ask you some of these questions, the reason why I share that story is I want you to answer them with grace and reflection.
And then as I give you. Some tools, I want you to take them seriously. OK, yeah, let's go all in. But then let's also not bite off more than we can chew, which is what I essentially did.
And so even though I accomplished a lot of things this last year. There were things that fell short that like with my money making goal. But what he brought up to me, which I have not really announced all announced here, why not, is I will be a published author by the end of the year. So we are going to have my book launch comes out in February.
So. Yeah. So you've shifted gears because you've always wanted to publish a book that wasn't on your goals list. It was to start a book, but you will be a published author.
And I was like, oh, true. And so anyway, sometimes we have to shift. We have to pivot. Things change, but we're still progressing and that's still OK.
So as you go through these reflection questions that I have for you and some ideas on how to stay focused on your goals moving forward. Give yourself. Some grace and love and appreciation for everything that you have had happen in 2024 to make it a good or sometimes we call it a bad year, but it is a good time to reflect and then recommit. So what else are you going to do this next year to move forward?
Because even though we are creatures of habit, we want to progress. The natural inclination is to continually progress, become better versions of ourselves up level. And if we're doing that year over year, even if we don't quite hit our goals, every single one of them like I did this year, but we do hit quite a few of them, then essentially we've won. We've done a good job.
And so let's get into it. So in order to up level, we essentially need to create a new paradigm, meaning a new identity for ourselves. Like when we show up in a different energy, essentially a different identity, like who we already there's this part of our being. It just.
Is that our being is true. It's just it's perfect. It's godly. But then the human part of us holds a back.
And so if we can tap into our like inner being, who we truly are, the godly part of ourself, we are going to do so much better because we'll show up in that energy. And when we show up in that energy, we actually attract more into our life. And so moving into 2025. If you can tap into that higher energy, which is just allowing it to flow, allowing you to show up in that place, you're going to be better off.
OK, so now I'm going to ask you this question. What do you want to leave behind in 2024? What happened in 2024 or who were you not? What did you do?
What did you not do? What beliefs did you have? If you were an entrepreneur, maybe you had the belief that selling is hard. Or that people don't want your programs.
Maybe you're a mom and you thought that you're you don't have enough patience. Maybe you had some really bad tragedy or some traumatic thing, something to where you need to just let that go. You need to leave it behind. If you're tapping into a higher identity, a new paradigm, then what can you take on in 2024?
And what belief can you start to work? What can you start to work on to believe, changing your thought patterns, changing those synapses in your brain to where you can be that person? There's going to be beliefs that you have to leave behind. You're saying, OK, it's like you're drawing a line in the sand and you're saying, here's the line.
I can no longer do this. I'm not going to believe this anymore because it doesn't serve me. I am not going to believe this anymore because it is holding me back. And so I want you to write down that question.
What do I want to leave behind in 2023? And after this podcast, I want you to really think about that. What is it that you want to leave behind? Maybe you're healing from some trauma and you're like, whatever happened to you in 2024, you were really ready to let go.
Maybe it wasn't even 2024. Maybe it was 10 years ago and you're still holding on to it and it is still holding you back. And it's keeping you from that higher paradigm, that better, higher identity, that self that you want to become. Make a list.
Everything that you want to leave behind in 2023. The list may be long. It may be short. But you're essentially drawing the line in the sand and saying, you are no longer welcome to come with me because I am becoming a better person.
I am letting that go. I am letting that thought go. I'm letting those beliefs go. I'm letting that pain go.
Maybe you weren't smart with your money. You're letting that go. You get to decide right now how you're going to show up in 2023. Which leads me to my next question.
Out of what happened in 2024 or even 2023, whatever is going on in your life that you want to bring with you, what is it? What do you want to take with you in 2025? This can be things that you're already proud of. This can be things that are new.
These are the new beliefs I'm going to take with me. So, in sales, I said belief that selling is hard. Maybe you can take on the belief that selling is easy and that you attract clients easily. They're actually chasing you and it's on autopilot.
These clients are finding you everywhere. Maybe you want to take with you that you have built-in systems that work for you in your program so you don't have to work so hard. Maybe you want to take with you that you are the CEO of your life. The belief that I am the CEO of my life, of my home.
And that goes for everyone that's tuning in, by the way. It doesn't matter. If you have a business, it doesn't matter if you are a stay-at-home mom. It doesn't matter if you go into work.
You get to decide that you are a smart CEO of your life, of your finances, of your home, of your family. You are a smart CEO. You can decide that. Now, of course, I don't know what it is that you want to take into 2025.
But those are just some ideas. What are beliefs that you love about yourself already that you can take into 2025? And what are beliefs that you want to adopt and bring with you into 2025? This is how I am going to start showing up.
I am going to be wise with my life and with my money. I am going to be intentional about how I treat people in 2025. I am going to be more patient. I am going to let go.
I am going to let go of treating people a certain way that really doesn't serve them or you. I am going to be intentional about how I show up for others. What is it that you want to take with you in 2025? I want you to sit with that.
Think about it. Write it down. Because ultimately, all of this that we are talking about right now is going to help you stay with your New Year's resolutions. Because when you step into that higher energy, when you step into a whole new identity, which is essentially a truer identity, you are going to attract more into your life.
And you are going to be able to stay the course easier because it does feel easy because you are being a more potent version of you. You are being who you truly are meant to be. The next question is, what do I want my year to look like? What do you want it to look like?
Do you have an income goal? Do you know what you want to see? Do you know what you want to sell? Do you know how you want to treat people?
Do you have boundaries around your days? What do you want your schedule to look like? Every single day, how do you want to show up? For me, in my life, I know that when I keep my own commitments to myself, I show up better in every other area of my life.
And so I do have a really regimented, morning and people can look at that and think that it's really restricting. But for me, it sets me up for success for the rest of the day. And so when I wake up, I literally wake up, I make my bed, I go into my bathroom, and I put on my contacts, I brush my teeth, I put on deodorant, those types of things. I put on my workout clothes right then.
When I wake up, I know the first thing that I'm going to do are those things. I'm going to go work out. After my workout, I'm going to do my meditation, I'm going to do my reading, and I'm going to do my manifesting. I do this every single morning, no matter what.
Then I eat a healthy breakfast, and I'm ready to roll. When I do that, I feel like a million bucks. I'm in my power. I'm ready to tackle the day.
And I feel like I have so much more to do. Now, within that morning, I'm also switching laundry. I am cleaning, cleaning up the kitchen a little bit. There's some other things that are going on, but essentially, I am choosing myself the minute that I wake up.
And I have done this for years, but now it's easy. When I don't do that now, it feels awkward. It feels weird. It feels like things are off.
But when I wake up, and I feel my, I also do some spiritual reading. That's part of my manifesting. But so when I wake up, and I feel my body, my mind, my spirit, I am ready to go. And so I want to ask you, what do you do when you wake up?
Do you roll over and start scrolling on your phone? Or do you choose yourself? I'm asking you to choose yourself, whatever that looks like for you. It's going to be different.
For me, that is what works for me. That's what's worked for me for a long time. It's what I do. I write in my gratitude journal.
All of that is just automatic. It's what I do. That's what I mean when I say, what do you want your year to look like? What can you start doing?
How do you show up consistently for yourself? How do you show up the way that you want to show up, but you keep being scared and you're hiding somehow, whether you're not posting on social media, and you feel like you need to be more visible, or whether you're not being honest with yourself or your spouse. What is it that you're doing that you're like, okay, I'm not going to show up that like that anymore. This is how I'm going to show up.
Find what works for you and stick with it. So, those are the first three questions I want you to really listen or think about and work through. This is literally something where I want you to sit down. You write down these questions.
You brainstorm. What do you want to leave behind in 2024? What do you want to take with you in 2025? What do you want your year to look like?
And what I mean by that is everything. From the minute you wake up, to the vacations that you want to take, to how you want to be in your relationships, how you want to be with your professional life, whatever that looks like for you, I want you to write it out. So once you have all of those identified, it's time to move on. And this is what I do every single year.
So I'm sharing it with you. Hopefully it's going to be something that you can benefit from and that you love as well. But what I do is what I do every single year. I'm going to share it with you.
It's once I have some intentions of what I want to leave behind, the energy that I'm leaving behind the energy that I'm bringing with me, the beliefs and what I want my year to look like. I then map it out with my goals for the upcoming year. And how I do this is I think about four words, and this might be something that you need to meditate for a little bit. What are the words that I want to use this year?
And I've heard that a lot of people just even use one word. So if one word works for you, do one word. But I like four words. So I'm going to use the words that I've chosen for this year.
And so the words that I used last year, 2024 was connection, love, health, and miracles. The words that I have chosen for this year is interesting because I did this separately. So I pulled up 2024 after I had already been working on 2025 and there's some crossover, which I thought was interesting. So for 2025, the words that I have chosen, are creation, connection, gratitude, and breakthrough.
And with how I show up, I want to give everyone the sizzle, not the steak. So that's my own little saying. I know what that means for me, but anyway, so I thought it was interesting. Connection is in both years.
So I am still working on connection apparently. But I want you to think of some words that you can continually like use and think about. So I want you to think of some words that you can continually like use and think about. For the words of the year, whether it be one, whether it be two, I choose four.
It really doesn't matter. I just want you to choose some. These words have meaning. And from this, these words that have meaning, you are going to create a mantra.
Now at the time of this recording, I actually have not put my mantra together for 2025. That's still something I need to do this weekend, but I will read mine from 2024. So when you understand, or when you, when you are very connected to the words that you have chosen, and they have a lot of meaning behind them, then you can make a mantra and be intentional about it. And the words that I chose for 2024, again, we're connection, love, health, and miracles.
And the mantra that I chose was, I attract miracles into my life every day while connecting to myself and others through love. As I do that, my health improves and my love and peace deepen. Now, the reason why that was my mantra was, was honestly, I was recovering from some pretty traumatic, really deep trauma, actually. And so it was important for me to make sure that I was continually healing through that in all of 2024, because 2023 was a really rough year for me.
And so I wanted to make sure that I was looking for the miracles, and I was connecting to myself and others, the people that I love. And I knew that if I did that with love, and if I was focused on love, that my heart would be in love. My heart would continually open, which means it would also continually heal. So that was very important.
I was moving into the year 2024 last year. My health was also struggling at that time. And so it was important for me, for my health to improve, and for my love and my peace to deepen. And so those were the words that I chose.
And so they had a lot of meaning to them. But as I continually thought about those words and thought about my mantra, I really truly look back on this and I'm like, wow, I healed a lot over the year of 2024. And I did feel a lot of love and a lot of peace. And there were miracles that happened.
And again, going back to what I said towards the beginning of this podcast, it's important because you do attract everything that you put out. If you're focused on scarcity mindset, if you're focused on everything that you don't have, if you're focused and you're in this like really hurry type energy, you are going to feel stuck. But when you are opened up to what can be, and you're coming from a place energetically that you're allowing these things to happen in your life, they will happen. And your life will change.
And looking back at this, that's what happened for me in 2024. And so pick your words, create a mantra. And then next, I want you to, this is important, but also I'm going to put some caution around this. I go through all five areas of things that I want, to achieve in the next year.
So I have spiritual slash mindset growth. I have physical, I have business, I have relationship and family. And so yours might be just three things. But as I do this, or three categories, as I do this, I want you to do it with caution.
Because the reason why people fall flat, and the reason why they don't stick to their goals, is because they shoot for the moon too quickly. And energetically, they're not aligned, and they self-sabotage. And so, if you can let go of the things you want to leave behind, like I talked about. So if you let that go energetically, and you bring with you the things that you want, and you plan out how you want your year to look, you're already off to a better start of keeping those goals.
But then you're going to continually review these. And so I put down what different goals, two to three in each category, of what I want to have happen over the year in these areas. And then I continually review them, and see how I'm doing. And so going back to 2024, when I pulled this up, I did pretty well with my spiritual and mind growth.
I did not read as many books as I had planned on. But I gave myself grace, because I actually studied a lot of the books. So it took me a lot longer to get through them, because I truly studied. And the fact that I was studying and growing every single day, even though I didn't hit the number, I did really progress when it came to my spiritual and mindset growth.
And so that's one way you can measure it, if things don't look the way that you thought they would by the end of the year. And physical, same thing. Business, family, relationship. Those are the categories that I use.
And I highly recommend you don't do more than two or three per category, because you don't want to set yourself up for failure, or feel like you can't achieve it. But I do want you, at the same time, to stretch yourself. So if that feels like a lot, see what you can do. See what you're capable of.
Because I promise you're more capable, In 2025, the words that I've chosen, creation, connection, gratitude, and breakthrough, is I want to continually be more. I want to build my grateful muscle. I feel like I am a grateful person. But I know that I could do even more.
And I think as you practice gratitude, you have more that even comes to you. There's a lot of creation happening in my life right now, the goals that I want to achieve. There's some goals that I have. I'm not going to tell you what they are right here.
I'm telling you a lot of things, but not those things. And they will take a lot of creation and breakthrough. And so those are the words that I have chosen. I want you to reflect back on everything that I've said here.
The three questions, what I want to leave behind in 2023, what I want to take with me in 2024, what I want my year to look like. And then you're going to map out the different categories, whether it be three or five, spiritual, physical, business, relationship, family, as well as your words and a mantra that you can say. Now, when it comes to the mantra, it has to be something that feels so true that you can get behind and that you are completely motivated when you hear it. Like my mantra again for 2024 is so powerful.
I attract miracles into my life every day while connecting to myself and others through love. As I do that, my health improves and my love and my peace deepen. It's a pretty powerful mantra, but it feels so true. And looking back, that mantra was very evident throughout the year.
So that is your homework. Your homework is to go and take all these things and do them. Do them and see what your year can look like. Because the beauty is, as we're continually progressing, a year can feel long when you're at the front of it, looking at January, but December comes quick.
And also a lot can happen in a year's time. Your finances can totally change in a year's time. You can switch jobs, relationships. There's so much that can change in a year, even though it's short.
But if you continually stay the path of progression and you continually look for ways to step into a higher paradigm identity, that's your true identity that you're just scratching the surface of right now. As you step into that, it feels better. You attract more. You become more you, that you know that it's in there.
And it feels good. And that's what I want for you. I want you for you to continually progress and to continually just be proud of yourself and everything that you're doing. Giving yourself grace where you fall short, because we all do.
We are not perfect. But that's also the beauty. The beauty is the fact that we aren't perfect, but that we continually get up, even when things are hard, that we continually push through and we find another way. We look for another way to do things.
We look for a different path. We look for new ways to look at different perspectives. And all of it is beautiful. So with that, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year.
I hope that you have a fabulous holiday. I will be having a fabulous holiday. I'm so excited. In just a few days, we are going to head out to Mexico.
And we're going to be there for nine days, I think. Nine days. And then we're going to come back. It's going to be the new year.
And I'm going to be... Ready to rock and roll in coaching and all of the things. And I also, if you haven't heard, I'm releasing a money attraction course that I'm super excited about that is for everyone. So it doesn't matter if you have a business or not.
It doesn't matter if you're a boy, girl, whatever. This course is something that will allow you to attract more money and abundance into your life. And there are concepts that are just so powerful. And that will be released this mid-month.
So look forward to that. I'm so excited. There will be some pre-sales that will go on sale. So look for that as well.
But this next year is going to be amazing. I'm so excited for all the things that I know that I'm putting together for you, for the listeners, for my clients. And I'm excited to just hit the ground running. So again, I hope you have a very Merry Christmas.
And I will see you. Or at least I'll be here in another episode. See you. I'll see you in another episode, but I will be here.
