The Unblocked Method™
The Default Identity Loop™
Have you ever known exactly what you should do, and then watched yourself do the thing you've always done? That's the loop. Here's how it runs, where it gets interrupted, and how the aligned loop rewires it, one rep at a time.
By Amy Sanders
You knew you didn't need another opinion. You asked five more people anyway. You knew you wanted to say no. You said yes the second you were asked, and then resented your sister for asking. You knew the post was good. You watered it down before you hit publish.
And afterward you ask yourself, why do I keep doing this when I know better?
That is the loop. The Default Identity Loop is the cycle that keeps you becoming the same version of you, even when you're capable of more. Five steps: experience, meaning, response, result, reinforcement. Once you see it, you'll start seeing it everywhere.
One thing before we walk it. The loop is the engine of The Unblocked Method™. It isn't a Human Design idea or an Enneagram idea, and you don't need to know your type to catch it running. The Method is the foundation. The Enneagram and Human Design are tools I use to take that work deeper, and I'll show you exactly what each one adds a little further down.
How the loop runs
The Default Loop reinforces who you’ve learned to be.
Experience · What happened?
Something happens, outside you or inside you. A text that doesn’t get answered. A wave of doubt on a Tuesday.
Meaning · What did I make it mean?
Your brain doesn’t leave an experience alone. It hands you a story about what it means. This is the hinge.
Response · How did I respond?
Emotionally, physically, and in what you actually said and did next.
Result · What did that create?
Something happens in the world because of how you responded.
Reinforcement · What did that reinforce?
The result becomes evidence. “See? I knew it.” And the identity that started the loop gets stronger.
Identity isn’t the fifth step. It’s already there at the start, deciding what the experience means, and every run hands it more evidence. That’s why the loop gets stronger every time it runs, and why you can see a pattern clearly and still repeat it.
The five steps
Something happens. That's the experience. It can be external, like a text that doesn't get answered. It can be internal, like a wave of doubt on a Tuesday afternoon.
Then you make it mean something. This is the step most people skip right over. Your brain doesn't leave an experience alone. It hands you a story about what it means.
That meaning shapes how you respond. Emotionally, physically, in what you say and do next. That's your response.
Your response contributes to a result. Something actually happens in the world because of how you responded.
And here's the piece that makes this different from a lot of other work: the result becomes evidence. It reinforces something you already believed about yourself, about other people, or about how life works. That's reinforcement. And reinforcement updates your identity, which you carry straight into the next experience.
So there's no straight line. It's a loop. And it gets stronger every time it runs.
Identity isn't the fifth step
Here's the distinction that matters most. Identity isn't sitting at the end of the loop waiting to be created. It's already there, at the beginning, deciding what the experience means.
Imagine a woman whose identity says: I have to do everything myself. Her husband loads the dishwasher, and he loads it differently than she does. That's the experience. She makes it mean he's doing it wrong, and it would be easier to just do it herself. That's the meaning. So she gets irritated, corrects him, maybe goes in after him and rearranges it. That's the response.
I bet you know someone who does this.
And what happens? He helps less. Nothing he does is right anyway, so he stops trying. That's the result. And she says, see, I knew it. I really do have to do everything myself. That's the reinforcement. The identity that started the loop just got stronger.
She didn't react to a dishwasher. She reacted to a dishwasher through “I have to do everything myself.” The meaning was never neutral. It came pre-loaded.
Why the pattern feels so true
Patterns don't feel like patterns when you're inside them. They feel like truth. They feel like you being normal.
You aren't just thinking “people leave me” or “I can't hold my value.” You've been collecting evidence for it. You feel it in your body. The loop has handed you receipts for years, and your brain is extremely good at building an intelligent case around something your nervous system already decided.
That's why “I always end up here” sounds like wisdom instead of a pattern. The default loop is simply who you've learned to be. The identity you've practiced so long you don't have to consciously choose it anymore. Every result it produces looks like proof.
Why knowing it isn't enough
You can understand this loop perfectly and still run it.
Awareness lives in your mind. The loop lives in your nervous system, and your body reacts faster than logic. So when your partner goes quiet, or a potential client hesitates at your price, your brain isn't asking “what's the aligned move for the woman I'm becoming?” It's asking “what worked last time?” It reaches into the filing cabinet and pulls out the old strategy before you've had a single conscious thought.
You don't repeat patterns because you're weak. You repeat them because your identity is trying to stay consistent with what it knows. Even when the familiar hurts. Even when it's not serving you.
Identity isn't what you want. Identity is what you repeatedly reinforce.
Where the loop gets interrupted
The loop has one step where choice becomes available: the meaning.
The experience already happened. You can't un-load the dishwasher. But between “he loaded it differently” and “he's doing it wrong” there's a gap, and that gap is where the whole method lives. Catch the meaning, and you get to choose the response. Choose a different response, and you create a different result. A different result is new evidence. New evidence, repeated, is a new identity.
That's the aligned loop. Same five steps. Different identity running them.
Where the Method interrupts the loop
Same five steps. Different woman running them.
The same moment, run both ways. Back to the dishwasher.
Experience · What happened?
DefaultHer husband loads the dishwasher differently than she does.
AlignedSame moment. He loads the dishwasher differently.
Meaning · What did I make it mean?
Default“He’s doing it wrong. It would be easier to just do it myself.”
AlignedShe catches it. The aligned meaning can be as small as “differently isn’t automatically wrong.”
Response · How did I respond?
DefaultShe gets irritated, corrects him, maybe goes in after him and rearranges it.
AlignedShe leaves it alone. Every cell in her body wants to reach in and fix it. She doesn’t.
Result · What did that create?
DefaultHe helps less. Nothing he does is right anyway, so he stops trying.
AlignedSomeone else contributed. She didn’t carry it all. The dishes still got clean.
Reinforcement · What did that reinforce?
Default“See? I knew it. I really do have to do everything myself.”
Aligned“I can receive help without controlling how it happens.” One rep.
You don’t have to believe the new identity first. The response can come before the belief, and the rep still counts while your whole body is arguing with you. Every aligned rep hands the woman you’re becoming one more piece of evidence, and after enough of them, what used to take conscious effort starts to feel like, yeah, this is actually me. Your brain rewires on evidence, not affirmations. That’s when you stop interrupting the loop and start moving from alignment. The old loop doesn’t disappear. It loses its grip.
The Aligned Identity Loop: same loop, different woman running it
Awareness is wonderful. You can be aware all day long. But then what?
That's the question I hear most once a woman finally sees her loop. She can name it. She can tell you exactly what she makes things mean and what it keeps costing her. And she's still standing in her kitchen wanting to rearrange the dishwasher.
Here's the part nobody talks about: you don't have to become a completely different human before you can change the loop. You need a different rep. That's it. The Aligned Identity Loop is the same five steps, run from a different identity. Instead of “who I've learned to be,” the identity running it is “who I'm becoming.”
The default loop asks, in effect, what worked last time? The aligned loop asks two different questions. Which identity is running the loop right now? And what would create evidence for the woman I'm becoming instead?
Back to the dishwasher. Same experience. The old meaning was: different means wrong. But this time she catches it. She doesn't have to convince herself this is the most beautifully loaded dishwasher she's ever seen. That would feel like a lie, and your identity does not update on a lie. The aligned meaning can be as small as this: differently isn't automatically wrong.
Her aligned response is that she leaves it alone. And listen, she's uncomfortable. Every cell in her body wants to reach in and fix it. She doesn't. The result: someone else contributed. She didn't carry it all. The dishes still got clean. And the reinforcement: I can receive help without controlling how it happens. One rep.
The response can come before the belief. You can hold the boundary and still feel guilty. You can make the decision and still feel uncertain. You can accept the help and still want to take over and do it your way. And every time you do, your brain gets another piece of evidence: maybe this is who I am now. Not because you said it. You lived it.
The woman you're becoming needs evidence, not affirmations. Go give her one piece today.
Where the Enneagram and Human Design come in
Everything above works on its own. The loop runs in every woman whether or not she's ever heard of a Generator or a Type 3, and the Method is how you see it, interrupt it, and start running a different one. That's the foundation. The tools sit on top of it.
Here's what they do. The Enneagram gives me a language for the strategy underneath the behavior: what you're trying to get, what you're trying to avoid, what feels threatening to your identity. In loop terms, it tells you which meanings you're most likely to reach for, so you can catch them sooner.
Human Design gives me a lens on how you naturally operate when you're not forcing yourself into somebody else's way of doing life: how you use energy, how you actually make decisions, where you're susceptible to conditioning. In loop terms, it shows you what an aligned response looks like for you, not for the woman next to you.
The tools don't define you or put you in a box. They give you more information to work with. They make the Method stronger and faster. They don't make it work. Your Enneagram number is not an excuse, and your Human Design chart is not a cage. These aren't boxes. They're mirrors.
Run one of your own
Think of a reaction this week that was bigger than the circumstance deserved. Then walk it: What happened? What did I make it mean? How did I respond? What did that create? What did that reinforce?
Don't fix it yet. Just see it. Seeing it is the first move, and you can't shift what you can't see.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Default Identity Loop?
Amy Sanders' name for the five-step cycle that keeps a pattern running: an experience happens, you assign it a meaning, the meaning drives your response, the response produces a result, and the result reinforces the identity you started with. Identity sits underneath the loop, shaping the meaning from the start, so every run makes the pattern feel more true.
Why do I keep repeating the same patterns even when I know better?
Awareness lives in your mind and the loop lives in your nervous system. Under pressure, your brain reaches for what worked last time, not for what's aligned, and it does that faster than you can think. You repeat the pattern because your identity is trying to stay consistent with what it knows, not because you're weak or haven't learned enough.
Where does the loop get interrupted?
At the meaning. You can't change what happened, but you can catch the story you're attaching to it before you respond from it. That gap between experience and meaning is where choice lives. A different meaning allows a different response, which creates a different result, which becomes evidence for a different identity.
What is the Aligned Identity Loop?
The second half of The Unblocked Method's core teaching. It uses the same five steps as the Default Identity Loop (experience, meaning, response, result, reinforcement) but runs them from the identity you're becoming instead of the identity you learned to be. Each aligned run produces a result that becomes evidence for the new identity, which is how identity actually updates.
Is the Default Identity Loop a Human Design or Enneagram concept?
No. It is the engine of The Unblocked Method and runs in everyone, with or without either tool. The Method is the foundation. The Enneagram can tell you which fear tends to shape your meanings, and Human Design can show how you naturally make decisions, which makes the loop easier to catch and the aligned response easier to find. They take the work deeper. They don't make it work.
See your loop in a real session
Reading about the loop is one thing. Catching your own while it's running is the work, and the hardest time to see it is when you're inside it. The Mirror is built for that moment. It knows your patterns, your Enneagram, your Human Design, and the work you've already done. It doesn't tell you who to be. It shows you what's there.
