How do I set goals I will actually follow through on instead of quitting after a few weeks?
What This Episode Is About
Amy walks you through the exact goal-setting process she learned in coaching school, the one that gets you past the three-week mark where most resolutions die. You write down 25 things you want, pick just one, turn it into a measurable sentence with a deadline, anchor it to a strong why, then list every action and every obstacle and turn those obstacles into strategies. The core shift is doing one goal at a time, planning for what could go wrong, and transferring it all into your calendar so the plan can actually carry you.
This is where most people really shoot themselves in the foot, they come up with so many resolutions that it is almost impossible to achieve them, so pick one goal.
What You'll Hear
- Why most people fail their resolutions around the three-week mark and how to not be one of them
- The 25-things list, and why you only pick one goal from it
- How to write a goal as a measurable sentence with a real deadline
- Listing your obstacles on purpose and turning each one into a strategy
- Why doing one goal at a time builds the confidence that fuels the next one
Grab your pen, paper and prepare to manifest everything you want in the new year. In this episode, Amy guides you through a step by step process on how to set, maintain and achieve your goals for 2023. "Pick one goal, plan for the obstacles, and put it in your calendar, because that is really all it takes."
Your Invitation
Grab a pen and paper, listen again, and actually do the process. Write your 25 things, choose one, make it measurable, and start building the plan that carries you to it.
When you are ready to see your own patterns clearly and move differently, the Mirror is where that work begins.
Meet the Mirror →Questions This Episode Answers
- Why do most people fail their new year's resolutions?
- Because they set too many at once and have no plan for the obstacles, so when things get hard around the three-week mark they quit. The fix is one goal at a time with a clear, scheduled plan you can count on.
- How many goals should I work on at a time?
- Just one. You write down 25 things you want, pick a single goal to start, and only add a new one once you have completed it. Doing one at a time builds real confidence in what you can achieve.
- How do I write a goal so I know when I have actually achieved it?
- Put it into a measurable sentence with a date, what you will have created, and how you will know you are done. It has to stretch you but still be completable in the timeframe you choose.
- What do I do with the obstacles that could get in my way?
- List every obstacle on purpose, then turn each one into a strategy or a skill you need to develop. Planning for what could go wrong ahead of time is what sets you up for success.
- What is the last step that makes the plan stick?
- Sort your action list and strategies into the order you will execute them, decide how long each will take, and transfer every item into your calendar with its timeframe. The calendar is what turns the plan into something you can actually follow.

I'm a fitness and wellness pro, mom, stepmom, second wife, and master certified life coach. I'm here to help you manage your mind so you can uncover the most potent version of yourself and create the thriving life you love. Okay, guys. We are in the year 2023.
Can you believe it? 2022 is wrapped up and now we are looking at a brand new year. And so as the first episode of this year, I wanted to talk about goal setting. It's the most perfect time to talk about it.
And I am going to walk you through a process that basically helps you achieve your goals. So we do know that when it comes to goals, especially at the beginning of the year, we have really big expectations for ourselves. We have all of these new year's resolutions, but the majority of people that don't hit their new year's resolutions is really, really high. In fact, after about three weeks of the new year's resolutions, people start to fail.
And what I want to offer you today in this episode is a sure way to be able to achieve your goals that you have for 2023. And I'm going to walk you through a process that will help you achieve these goals. So the very first thing I want you to do is to listen to this podcast. You might want to listen to it once and then listen to it again with a pen and paper to write down the process that I'm going to give you.
And also with that process, I think it's important for you to know that I did not make this up. This is something that I was taught when I went through my life coach school training, and it is very powerful. And so I'm excited to bring it to you here today. So the very first thing you're going to do when it comes down is to write down 25 things you want.
25 things. What is it that you are dying to achieve or do? Write those things down. It might be making a certain amount of money this year.
It might be losing weight. It might be writing a book. There are a ton of different things that could be, but you are going to write down 25 right now. Okay.
Once you hit 25, you're going to look at that list and you are going to pick one, just one. This is where most people really shoot themselves in their foot is they, you know, first of the year, they come up with so many different resolutions for this new year's resolutions that it's almost impossible to achieve them. And so they fell pretty fast and pretty hard. I don't want that for you.
So pick one goal. Once you've picked one goal from your list, you are going to put it into a measurable sentence by fill in the date. Maybe it's December 1st, 2022. I have, I have completed and created fill in the blank, whatever it is you've completed and created.
And I will know that I'm done because whatever it is. So an example might be for, I'm an entrepreneur by December 1st, 2022, I will have completed and created 10 new full priced clients. And I will know that I'm done because of the income I will have. That's an example.
You could also fill in the blank here with weight loss, but it has to be measurable so that you know, when you've actually completed it. There has to be a deadline. This is where a lot of people get hung up, pick something that causes you to stretch, but also puts it's something that you can actually complete within the timeframe that you choose so that you actually can achieve it is what I'm saying. Okay.
And then once you've done that, you've got to commit to it. The next thing I want you to do is ask yourself, why, why is it that you want to achieve this goal? If you don't have a strong enough, why, when you are putting yourself out there, why is it that you want to achieve this goal? If you are putting yourself out there, then you can end up really, again, shooting yourself in the foot because when things get hard, it's really easy to just stop to not keep going to fail and be done.
We don't want that for you. So make sure you have a really strong, why it might be, you want to make more money so you can take your kids on an amazing vacation. It might be that you want to lose weight because your health is really important to you. Whatever it is, make sure that it's strong enough to help you keep going.
The next exercise that you're going to do is brainstorm. You're going to list every single thing you need to do in order to accomplish this goal. And you do have to have a big list, breaking it down step by step. So what is it that you need to do if it's weight loss?
How often are you going to the gym? How does that increase over time? Maybe you start by two days a week and then by within a few weeks, you're going three days a week and then you're increasing your time at the gym. You're eating healthier.
You're water, whatever it is, you're going to write down all of the different things that you need to do in order to accomplish this goal. So if it's business, it's going to look different. Maybe you write down all the different marketing strategies you're going to use and then break those down, what that actually looks like, you know, whether it's Facebook ads or organic marketing or whatever, but list everything that you actually need to do in order to achieve that goal. The next thing you're going to do, which is super important, is list all of the obstacles that could come in the way of you achieving this goal.
List all of the obstacles. When you do this, it sets you up for success because you get to see, okay, and you plan for it. Like these obstacles could or will happen. I'm going to list them all down and then I'm going to create a strategy around how to overcome these obstacles.
So you're going to turn them into strategies or a skill that you need to develop. If it's like marketing, you're like, I need to learn more about Facebook marketing strategies. I'm going to develop that skill so that I can have success. I'm going to develop the skill of determination so that I don't give up.
Whatever it is, you're going to turn your obstacles into strategies so that you set yourself up for success. And once you have done all of those things, now is the plan where you're going to put it all together. So with the plan, you're going to take your do goals, lists, and strategies lists, and you're going to sort them into the order of execution that you need to. So make it as clear and specific as possible.
You're going to write down all of the do goals list, all the strategies list, sort them, and then determine how much time each of these things is going to take. When you do this work, it really sets you up for success. From there, you're going to add each item into your calendar with the time frame you've decided. So important.
This is the plan. So super simple, right? I'm going to go over it one more time so that it's clear because that's really all it is. That is what it takes to achieve a goal is just planning the obstacles you're going to have, plan the strategies you're going to have, making sure that you're totally in alignment with it.
So with goal setting, again, you write down your 25 things. You're going to write down your 25 things. Out of the 25, you pick only one. You put it into a measurable sentence, commit to it, and then ask yourself why you want to achieve that goal.
And then you make your do goals list, everything that you need to do in order to accomplish the goal. You make your strategy or your obstacles list of everything that could go wrong. And then you plan for it, turning those obstacles into strategies. And once you're there, you create the plan.
Putting those two lists together, in order of execution, make them clear and specific, determine how much time it's going to take, and then you'll transfer each of these items into your calendar with the time frame that you've decided on. If you follow this, you are going to have an awesome 2023 and be able to achieve those goals. This also works for things that are like longer, you know, five-year goals or 10-year goals. And that's basically it.
So within about 10 minutes, I've taught you how to realize the goals that you want to achieve. And then you're going to put them into your calendar. And then you want, starting with only one. Now here is a tip that I want to leave with you.
When you're done with that specific goal, you then add a new one. Instead of doing 10 at a time, you're doing one at a time and then moving on to the next one and then achieving that and moving on to the next one. And as you do that, you really start to build confidence within yourself and what you can achieve. And so that is the, like, probably the biggest tip I have for you when it comes to achieving goals is making sure that you're not biting off more than you can chew.
So that you don't fall into overwhelm and frustration and then give up. We want a specific, clear, strategic plan that you can count on, that you've transferred into your calendar, that you can use that will help you realize those goals. So good luck with 2023. I'm very excited to hear about some of these goals.
So if you want to share them with me, I would love to hear what's going on and what you're wanting to accomplish this year. I love having people boost each other up and cheer each other on. So if you want to share them with me, I would love to feel free to share. And with that, I look forward to hearing from you.
