Listen to this episode

What do I wish I knew before starting an online business, and why am I not making money yet?

What This Episode Is About

Amy shares five lessons she wishes she had known when she started building businesses online, from leaning into what makes you unique to hiring the right people sooner so you stop being the bottleneck. She makes the case that you do not need fancy websites or sales pages to make money, just an offer and a way to get paid, and that paying yourself first signals your own worth to you and to everyone else. The throughline is that your success rises and falls on your belief in yourself, and the deep work on your money beliefs is what lets your sales and conversions take off.

The business doesn't have to be hard. It's hard when we decide it's hard.

What You'll Hear

Your Invitation

Look honestly at whether you are paying yourself and whether you truly believe your business can be easy, and if there is stuck energy there, that is exactly where the deep work begins.

Questions This Episode Answers

Do I really need a fancy website and sales pages to start an online business?
No. Usually all you need is a solid offer and a way for people to pay you, plus a way to access your calendar if you coach. Many people build successful businesses without a website. The fancy building is often just busywork that avoids going out and making sales.
Should I pay myself first or reinvest everything into my business?
Pay yourself first. If you put every dollar back in and never pay yourself, you are subconsciously telling yourself you are not worth the money, and that energy can show up to others as a reason they do not buy. Pay yourself, then reinvest what is left.
When should I hire help in my business?
As soon as you can, hire the right people to do the things you dread or are not good at. They will do those things better because they love them, your business looks more professional, and you get freed up to stay in your own genius and move the needle faster.
How much does believing in myself really affect my results?
Your success depends on it. If you believe you can, you prove yourself right, and if you do not, you also prove yourself right. When you do the deep work on your beliefs, your body and subconscious come into alignment and your sales and conversions can multiply.

I want you to like really think about it. Like, could that be true for you? If you are not making money right now and you're not paying yourself first, is there a connection there? So yes, pay yourself first.

And then if you want to put some money back in your business, you can, but if you're not willing to pay you, you can't expect other people to also pay you. I'm just saying people will respond and do the exact same thing that you do. Welcome to the Thrive Her podcast. I'm your host, Amy Sanders.

I'm a fitness and wellness pro, mom, stepmom, second wife, and master certified life coach. I'm here to help you manage your mind so you can uncover the most potent version of yourself and create a thriving life you love. Hello, hello. Welcome back to the podcast.

I'm your host, Amy Sanders. And today on the podcast, we're talking about something that's a little bit different. We're actually talking about entrepreneurship and some business things that I wish I would have known when I first started as an entrepreneur, especially an entrepreneur online. Now, if this is not you, all hope is not lost because I'm sure that there are things that you're going to be able to learn and nuggets you're going to be able to take away by tuning in.

So thank you so much for being here. And the reason why I'm sharing this today is because as I know, as I'm moving into a week where I know I'm going to be recording podcasts, I like to think about turning inward and like really listening to what's on my heart. And so for whatever reason, this is what is on my heart. I usually talk about other things, but this is on my heart, which means that it needs to be shared.

So here I am going to share some of the things that I wish I would have known when I first started as an entrepreneur. And this was also a very long time ago, by the way, I think the very first entrepreneur type thing I did was I was like, I'm going to do this. I'm going to do this. I'm going was like when I was 22.

So it's been a long time. It's been like over 20 years that ages me a little bit. But if you are on this journey, you know, that being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. There are lots of highs.

There's lots of lows. Your income is not stable. There can be really good months. There could be really bad months, but being an entrepreneur is so incredibly rewarding because it sculpts you as a person in a way that, I don't think anything else can.

And it's well worth the sacrifice because you get to choose your life, right? You get to choose how you show up, when you show up, who you work with. There's a lot of amazing things that come with entrepreneurship, but there's a lot of really hard things that also come with entrepreneurship, but I wouldn't trade it. I love it.

Every time I tried to step away from it, I'm right back, but I have had so many successes and failures. And for sure, way more failures than successes. I've always tried to learn from those failures and not repeat them. Some things have worked really well.

Other things have not, but as a whole, there's a few things that I'm like, gosh, if I would have just shown up in that space, things would have worked out so much better for me, like way before things started working out for me and my businesses. So the very first thing that I want to talk to you about is the fact that you are unique. And when you are an entrepreneur or when you are starting a business online or becoming a coach or whatever, fill in the blank. A lot of times we've tried to copy other people because you see what's working.

And for real success does leave clues and take those clues, ask the people that are successful, do all of those things. Those things are not bad, but what I'm talking about is you start to almost build someone else's business their way. Because you start to copy everything they're doing instead of turning inward and looking at what you have, which is unique from them. What I'm talking about is what you have to offer is unique and staying in your power and moving into self-trust, knowing that you will make the best decision is probably the very most important thing you can do in your business, but it does take some work to get there.

But understand, understanding from the very beginning. So it takes work to build some of that self-trust for sure. But in the beginning, just understanding that you are unique. You are going to help people in a way that someone else can't and lean into that.

That is your superpower is that you're unique and your gift is going to be able to be seen and heard by a lot of other people. If you show up in your power, that's number one. Number two is, one of the very hardest lessons I ever learned. And that is hiring the right people actually moves the needle faster.

I am a person who was taught my whole life, you know, making money is hard. There's, there's a lot of money beliefs that did not serve me and that do not serve me now that I adapted to and subscribe to as I grew up. And one of them was just to do everything yourself, no matter what it is, do it yourself, figure it out. Find a way you're going to save money.

And this is something that has been really hard for me. And it's something that I've learned the hard way because in multiple businesses of mine, I've ended up moving a lot slower because I was the bottleneck. I was the person who was keeping things from moving forward because I was trying to do all of the things, or I would wait way too long to hire someone. Now with that said, I understand that if you're just getting started, sometimes you don't have the opportunity or the possibility, to hire someone, but just as soon as you can hire the right people that do the things that you don't want to do, hire the right people that love the things in your business that you dread that you hate, because when you do that, they are going to be able to do a better job because they're good at it and they love it.

So they're staying in their power and their genius, but it's also going to give you so much more time to stay in your power and your genius so that you can focus on what you're good at. And your business is going to look so much more professional because you have the right people in the right places to move that needle forward. The next thing, number three is the fact that you actually don't need a lot to start an online business. So many people think you need so many fancy sales pages.

You need the most perfect website. You need all of these different links going this way and that way. And the truth is you actually don't. There might be, depending on what your business is, you might be able to do a lot of things that you don't want to It can change, but usually if you have a product and if you have a link to buy it, that is all you need to get started.

If you're a coach, you need to have a way for people to access your calendar and a way for them to pay you. That's literally it. But what I see, and also I was guilty of this for sure, was that so many people focus so long on all of these little things like building their website, building sales pages, building, building, building, busy, busy, busy, creating way more content than you actually need to, like doing so many busy things that make you feel like you're, you know, working in your business. But ultimately you're just avoiding the things that you actually need to do, which is going out there and getting the sales, just actually putting yourself out there to create the income.

So let go of the fact that you need all of these different things before you can start. Truth is you can start right now, regardless of what it is that you're selling. As long as you have a way to pay people or for people to pay you. And as long as you have, you know, depending on your, whether you're a coach or whether you have a service or whether you have a product that they know what they're buying, you have a really solid offer.

You're offering it to people and they have a way to pay you. That is as simple as it can be. I promise you can make money that way. In fact, a lot of people make a ton of money that way.

I know coaches that are so busy that with their coaching clients, cause that's like what they're there to do, but they don't even have a website. They never even got to that point because they just have people coming in and they have a way to get paid and that works for them. So number three, again, is that you don't need all the fancy bells and whistles and sales pages in order to make money online. It's way easier than you'd think.

You just have to do the right things that bring clients in. And as you know, I do a lot of coaching on that as well. And so you can, reach out to me if you're like needing help in that area. Okay.

Number four is probably the second lesson that I learned that was the hardest one for me to learn. And it was also around my money blocks was paying yourself first is going to help and living in this abundance place. So paying yourself first and moving and living in abundance that things are going to work out for you. That is going to bring you more money and more clients faster than anything else.

Think about it. So if you want people to pay you, you have to be in that energy. And if you are not paying yourself, so if you earn $5,000 and you put $5,000 back in your business, a lot of people are like, Oh, I'm being so smart. I'm reinvesting in my business.

I can make more money. But if you didn't pay yourself anything subconsciously, you're telling yourself that you're not worth the money. And if that's helping subconsciously, then energetically, that is how you can come across to other people. People are going to feel that.

And that could be one reason why you are not getting clients is that you actually don't believe that you're worthy to be paid. And I know that you might be listening. It's like, no, there's no way, no way. But I want you to like, really think about it.

Like, could that be true for you? If you are not making money right now and you're not paying yourself first, is there a connection there? So yes, pay yourself first. And then if you want to put some money back in your business, you can, but if you're not willing to pay you, you can't expect other people to also pay you.

I'm just saying, people will respond and do the exact same thing that you do. And I'm going to actually have a podcast really soon on money beliefs because it's been a little while. And I think it's really important, but how you use your money and how you show up with your money and the relationship you have with your money is totally going to show up in your business and all the different ways. So number four, pay yourself first.

Number five is super, super, super important. Your success depends on your belief in yourself. If you do not believe that you can do it, you are going to prove yourself, right? But also if you believe that you can do it, you will prove yourself, right?

And that is the deep work that I do a lot with my clients is working through all of these different beliefs that they have. Like a lot of beliefs could be sales is hard. I'm not good at marketing. I don't know how to do coaching online, or I don't know how to put this product online or whatever it is.

All these beliefs that you can or that you can't always prove to be correct. So when you do that deep work, your cells and your conversions can literally 10 X, like really, really quickly because your body is in alignment. Your subconscious brain believes you, all of this is working together, body, mind, and soul. And things start to really move in your favor.

And I'm sure you can look back and like different areas of your life and you're like, yeah, actually I felt like that was like, everything was coming together in that way. Yes, it totally worked. And that can be the same thing in your business. In fact, one example I have is swimming lessons.

So we have this like swimming lesson company kind of random, I know, but we have a backyard pool and from an entrepreneur standpoint, I knew that if we put that pool in there, like we built the pool and we offered swim lessons, we could actually write off the pool project. So it was a way for us to, to write off the project on our taxes, which made sense. And so we're like, okay, let's do it. So I created a swim company and I brought in some swim instructors.

And from the second that I brought them in, I had the belief that swimming lesson business is easy. That was it. Like this is easy. People need swimming lessons.

Kids. That was it. And that is exactly what happened because that belief, I had this belief too, that it's the easiest business I've ever created. Guess what?

It actually is the easiest business I've ever created. It's like, I post some lessons, people sign right up. So there's the need, which obviously, you know, with business, you fulfill a need that people want. And so the need is being filled, but also that belief that people just sign up all the time is where I've lived and it has grown or doubled.

Every single year, super easy business model and the belief that this is easy. I want you to try that like in your own life, like having that belief, trusting, like, okay, I'm going to trust and believe in myself that I can do this. And I'm going to believe that this can work for me and really tune inward and listen. Do you believe this?

If you don't, there's work to do. If there's a little bit of like stuck energy, there's for sure work to do. But when you move into that space, it becomes easier. Being an entrepreneur, like I mentioned at the beginning of this episode is not for the faint of heart, but the business doesn't have to be hard.

It's hard when we decide it's hard. If we decide business can be fun. And if we decide that we have all of the answers inside us to create an amazing, successful business, then we really can create that most amazing, successful business. So moving through them one more time.

So there are a couple of things that I want to talk about. I want to talk about the top of your mind is number one, what you have to offer is unique. Stay in your power and trust yourself that you know what to do in your business. Hiring the right people is going to save you so much time and money in the long run.

When you hire people to do the things you don't like to do, or that you are not good at, because then you can focus on what you are good at again, which moves the needle way faster. Number three, you don't need all the bells and whistles. You don't need all the fancy things in order to make money online. It's way more easier than you think.

Trust that it's easy. Number four is paying yourself first and moving and living in that belief of abundance that everything is working out for you and your business is growing exponentially every single day. Pay yourself first so that others also show up for you the way you want them to, which is also by paying you. And the last one, again, is that your success depends on your belief in, yourself.

So do the deep work. Of course, you know that I'm here. This is a lot of the stuff that I coach on. So if you need help with the deep work or you feel stuck, or you're like, you know what?
